Anticipation
by Paul M.Varnold, D.V.M.
"This is an actual depiction of me preparing to do surgery on the cow; just one of many facets of
mixed veterinary practice today. Some other aspects of food animal practice are nutrition counseling, reproduction check-ups, animal welfare management and taking care of any sick animals that the farmer can't manage. Modern economics has forced the farmer to become more and more efficient to cope with his increased costs of production versus a stagnant or decreasing price for the commodities he produces. Since I started practice in 1970, dairy farms in this area have decreased by 70 percent. The future appears to be very bleak for dairy production in this area. I would not have stayed in business if not for the equine and small animal parts of my practice. I really do love working with the farmers and owners of all the animals I care for and appreciate the trust they have given me, but more so helping the cow, horse, dog or cat overcome an ailment and improve".
